The image above represents potentiometer output voltage of the circuit. To calculate potentiometer output voltage of the circuit under loaded condition, five essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Input Displacement (xi), Maximum Possible Displacement (xT), Input Voltage (vi), Maximum Possible Resistance (RT) and Resistance of the Measuring Device (Rl).
The formula for calculating potentiometer output voltage of the circuit:
vo = vi[xT / xi + RT / Rl(1 – xi / xT)]-1
Where:
vo = Potentiometer Output Voltage of the Circuit
xi = Input Displacement
xTÂ = Maximum Possible Displacement
vi = Input Voltage
RTÂ = Maximum Possible Resistance
Rl = Resistance of the Measuring Device
Let’s solve an example;
Find the potentiometer output voltage of the circuit when the input displacement is 12, the maximum possible displacement is 6, the input voltage is 11, the maximum possible resistance is 14 and the resistance of the measuring device is 20.
This implies that;
xi = Input Displacement = 12
xT = Maximum Possible Displacement = 6
vi = Input Voltage = 11
RT = Maximum Possible Resistance = 14
Rl = Resistance of the Measuring Device = 20
vo = vi[xT / xi + RT / Rl(1 – xi / xT)]-1
vo = 11 x [6 / 12 + 14 / 20 x (1 – 12 / 6)]-1
That is, vo = 11 x [0.5 + 0.7 x (1 – 2)]-1
vo = 11 x [0.5 + (0.7 x -1)]-1
vo = 11 x [0.5 + -0.7]-1
So, vo = 11 x [-0.199]-1
vo = 11 x -5.00
vo = -55.00
Therefore, the potentiometer output voltage of the circuit is -55.00 V.
