How to Calculate and Solve for Height of Fluidized Bed | Fluidization

The image above represents the height of a fluidized bed. To calculate the height of the fluidized bed, three essential parameters are needed, and these parameters are Distance Bubble Must Travel (K), Mass Transfer Coefficient for Bubble 1 (VB1), and Mass Transfer Coefficient for Bubble 2 (VB2).

The formula for calculating the height of a fluidized bed:

ΔZ = K In(VB1/VB2)

Where:

ΔZ = Height of Fluidized Bed
K = Distance Bubble Must Travel
VB1 = Mass Transfer Coefficient for Bubble 1
VB2 = Mass Transfer Coefficient for Bubble 2

Let’s solve an example;
Find the height of the fluidized bed when the distance bubble must travel is 16, the mass transfer coefficient for bubble 1 is 4, and the mass transfer coefficient for bubble 2 is 28.

This implies that;

K = Distance Bubble Must Travel = 16
VB1 = Mass Transfer Coefficient for Bubble 1 = 4
VB2 = Mass Transfer Coefficient for Bubble 2 = 28

ΔZ = K In(VB1/VB2)
ΔZ = 16 In(4/28)
That is, ΔZ = 16 In(0.142)
ΔZ = 16 (-1.945)
ΔZ = -31.134

Therefore, the height of fluidized bed is -31.134 m.
