How to Calculate and Solve for Angle Interface | Young’s Equation | Mineral Processing

The image above represents angle interface. To calculate angle interface, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Interfacial Tension between Solid and Air (γSA), Interfacial Tension between Liquid and Solid (γLS) and Interfacial Tension between Liquid and Air (γLA).

The formula for calculating angle interface:

θ = cos-1(γSA – γLS/γLA)

Where:

θ = Angle Interface | Young’s Equation
γSA = Interfacial Tension between Solid and Air
γLS = Interfacial Tension between Liquid and Solid
And then, γLA = Interfacial Tension between Liquid and Air

Let’s solve an example;
Find the angle interface when the interfacial tension between solid and air is 12, the interfacial tension between liquid and solid is 8 and the interfacial tension between liquid and air is 10.

This implies that;

γSA = Interfacial Tension between Solid and Air = 12
γLS = Interfacial Tension between Liquid and Solid = 8
And then, γLA = Interfacial Tension between Liquid and Air = 10

θ = cos-1(γSA – γLS/γLA)
θ = cos-1(12 – 8/10)
That is, θ = cos-1(4/10)
θ = cos-1(0.4)
θ = 66.42

Therefore, the angle interface is 66.42°.
