How to Calculate and Solve for Volume Measured of Gas Adsorbed | BET Adsorption Isotherm | Mineral Processing

The image above represents volume measured of gas adsorbed. To calculate for volume measured of gas adsorbed, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Monolayer Maximum Volume Uptake (Vm), c and Gas to Vapour Pressure Ratio (x).

The formula for calculating volume measured of gas adsorbed:

V = Vmcx/(1 – x) (1 + (c – 1)x)

Where:

V = Volume Measured of Gas Adsorbed | BET Adsorption Isotherm
Vm = Monolayer Maximum Volume Uptake
x = Gas to Vapour Pressure Ratio

Let’s solve an example;
Find the volume measured of gas adsorbed when the monolayer maximum volume update is 2, c is 4 and the gas to vapour pressure ratio is 6.

This implies that;

Vm = Monolayer Maximum Volume Uptake = 2
c = 4
x = Gas to Vapour Pressure Ratio = 6

V = Vmcx/(1 – x) (1 + (c – 1)x)
That is, V = (2)(4)(6)/(1 – 6)(1 + (4 – 1)6)
V = 48/(-5)(1 + (3)6)
V = 48/(-5)(1 + 18)
So, V = 48/(-5)(19)
V = 48/-95
V = -0.505

Therefore, the volume measured of gas absorbed is -0.505m³ .
