How to Calculate and Solve for Total Polarization | Electrical Properties

The image of total polarization is shown above. To calculate total polarization, three essential parameters are needed: electronic Polarization (Pe), ionic polarization (Pi), and Orientation Polarization (Po).

The formula for calculating total polarization:

P = Pe + Pi + Po

Where:

P = Total Polarization
Pe = Electronic Polarization
Also, Pi = Ionic Polarization
Po = Orientation Polarization

Let’s solve an example;
Find the total polarization when the electronic polarization is 24, the ionic polarization is 4 and the orientation polarization is 2.

This implies that;

Pe = Electronic Polarization = 24
Pi = Ionic Polarization = 4
And then, Po = Orientation Polarization = 2

That is, P = Pe + Pi + Po
P = 24 + 4 + 2
P = 30

Therefore, the total polarization is 30 C/m².

Calculating the Electronic Polarization when the Total Polarization, the Ionic Polarization and the Orientation Polarization are Given

Pe = P – Pi – Po

Where:

Pe = Electronic Polarization
P = Total Polarization
And then, Pi = Ionic Polarization
Po = Orientation Polarization

Given an example;
Find the electronic polarization when the total polarization is 29, the ionic polarization is 10 and the orientation polarization is 3.

This implies that;

P = Total Polarization = 29
Pi = Ionic Polarization = 10
And also, Po = Orientation Polarization = 3

Pe = P – Pi – Po
Pe = 29 – 10 – 3
That is, Pe = 19 – 3
Pe = 16

Therefore, the electronic polarization is 16.

Calculating the Ionic Polarization when the Total Polarization, the Electronic Polarization and the Orientation Polarization are Given

Pi = P – Pe – Po

Where:

Pi = Ionic Polarization
P = Total Polarization
Also, Pe = Electronic Polarization
Po = Orientation Polarization

Let’s solve an example;
Given that, the total polarization is 64, the electronic polarization is 21 and the orientation polarization is 5. Find the ionic polarization?

This implies that;

P = Total Polarization = 64
Pe = Electronic Polarization = 21
And then, Po = Orientation Polarization = 5

Pi = P – Pe – Po
That is, Pi = 64 – 21 – 5
Pi = 43 – 5
Pi = 38

Therefore, the ionic polarization is 38.

Calculating the Orientation Polarization when the Total Polarization, the Electronic Polarization and the Ionic Polarization are Given

Po = P – Pe – Pi

Where:

Po = Orientation Polarization
P = Total Polarization
Also, Pe = Electronic Polarization
Pi = Ionic Polarization

Let’s solve an example;

Find the orientation polarization when the total polarization is 72, the electronic polarization is 34 and the ionic polarization is 18.

This implies that;

P = Total Polarization = 72
Pe = Electronic Polarization = 34
And then, Pi = Ionic Polarization = 18

Po = P – Pe – Pi
Po = 72 – 34 – 18
So, Po = 38 – 18
Po = 20

Therefore, the orientation polarization is 20.
