Given an example;
Find the brinell hardness number when the load applied is 4, the diameter of indenter is 11 and the part of diameter of indenter in material is 8.

This implies that;

P = Load Applied = 4
D = Diameter of Indenter = 11
d = Part of Diameter of Indenter in Material = 8

HB = 2P/Ï€D(D – √(D² – d²))
HB = 2(4)/Ï€(11)(11 – √((11)² – (8)²))
That is, HB = (8)/(34.55)(11 – √((121) – (64)))
HB = (8)/(34.55)(11 – √(57))
HB = (8)/(34.55)(11 – (7.54))
So, HB = (8)/(34.5)(3.450)
HB = (8)/(119.2)
HB = 0.067

Therefore, the brinell hardness number is 0.067.
