How to Calculate and Solve for Diffusion Gradient | Diffusion in Alloying

The image above represents diffusion gradient. To calculate diffusion gradient, four essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Concentration of Metal A (CA), Concentration of Metal B (CB), Points of Metal A (xA) and Points of Metal B (xB).

The formula for calculating diffusion gradient:

dC/dx = (CA – CB)/(xA – xB)

Where:

dC/dx = Diffusion Gradient
CA = Concentration of Metal A
CB = Concentrations of Metal B
xA = Points of Metal A
xB = Points of Metal B

Let’s solve an example;
Find the diffusion gradient when the concentration of metal A is 2, the concentration of metal B is 3, the points of metal A is 4 and the points of metal B is 6.

This implies that;

CA = Concentration of Metal A = 2
CB = Concentrations of Metal B = 3
xA = Points of Metal A = 4
xB = Points of Metal B = 6

dC/dx = (CA – CB)/(xA – xB)
dC/dx = (2 – 3)/(4 – 6)
So, dC/dx = (-1)/(-2)
dC/dx = 0.5

Therefore, the diffusion gradient is 0.5
