How to Calculate and Solve for Conversion of Weight Percent to Atom Percent | Imperfection in Solids

The image above represents the conversion of weight percent to atom percent. To calculate the conversion of weight percent to atom percent, four essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Composition of Metal 1 (C1), Composition of Metal 2 (C2), Atomic Weight of Metal 1 (A1) and Atomic Weight of Metal 2 (A2).

The formula for calculating the conversion of weight percent to atom percent:

C’1 = 100(C1A2/(C1A2 + C2A1))

C’1 = Atom Percent
And then, C1 = Composition of Metal 1
C2 = Composition of Metal 2
A1 = Atomic Weight of Metal 1
A2 = Atomic Weight of Metal 2

Let’s solve an example;
Find the atom percent when the composition of metal 1 is 4, the composition of metal 2 is 8, the atomic weight of metal 1 is 6 and the atomic weight of metal is 3.

This implies that;

C1 = Composition of Metal 1 = 4
C2 = Composition of Metal 2 = 8
A1 = Atomic Weight of Metal 1 = 6
A2 = Atomic Weight of Metal 2 = 3

C’1 = 100(C1A2/(C1A2 + C2A1))
C’1 = 100((4)(3)/((4)(3) + (8)(6)))
So, C’1 = 100((12)/(12 + 48))
C’1 = 100((12)/(60))
That is, C’1 = 100(0.2)
C’1 = 20

Therefore, the atom percent is 20%.
