How to Calculate and Solve for Diffusion Coefficients | Diffusion in Alloying

The image above represents diffusion coefficients. To calculate diffusion coefficients, four essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Diffusion Coefficient (D1), Time for Diffusion (t1), Diffusion Coefficient (D2) and Time for Diffusion (t2).

The formula for calculating the diffusion coefficient, D1:

D1 = D2t2/t1

Where:

D1 = Diffusion Coefficient 1
D2 = diffusion coefficient 2
t1 = Time for Diffusion 1
t2 = time for diffusion 2

Given an example;
Find the diffusion coefficient 1 when the diffusion coefficient 2 is 4, the time for diffusion 1 is 8 and the time for diffusion is 10.

This implies that;

D2 = diffusion coefficient 2 = 4
t1 = Time for Diffusion 1 = 8
t2 = time for diffusion 2 = 10

D1 = D2t2/t1
That is, D1 = (8)(10)/(4)
D1 = (80)/(4)
D1 = 20

Therefore, the diffusion coefficient 1 is 20 g/mol.

Calculating the Diffusion Coefficient 2 when the Diffusion Coefficient 1, the Time for Diffusion 1 and the Time for Diffusion 2 are Given

D2 = D1 x t1 / t2

Where:

D2 = diffusion coefficient 2
D1 = Diffusion Coefficient 1
t1 = Time for Diffusion 1
t2 = time for diffusion 2

Given an example;
Find the diffusion coefficient 2 when the diffusion coefficient 1 is 10, the time for diffusion 1 is 2 and the time for diffusion 2 is 5.

This implies that;

D1 = Diffusion Coefficient 1 = 10
t1 = Time for Diffusion 1 = 2
t2 = time for diffusion 2 = 5

D2 = D1 x t1 / t2
So, D2 = 10 x 2 / 5
D2 = 20 / 5
D2 = 4

Therefore, the diffusion coefficient 2 is 4 g/mol.

Calculating the Time for Diffusion 1 when the Diffusion Coefficient 1, the Diffusion Coefficient 2 and the Time for Diffusion 2 are Given

t1 = D2 x t2 / D1

Where:

t1 = Time for Diffusion 1
D1 = Diffusion Coefficient 1
D2 = diffusion coefficient 2
t2 = time for diffusion 2

Let’s solve an example;
Find the time for diffusion 1 when the diffusion coefficient 1 is 10, the diffusion coefficient 2 is 8 and the time for diffusion 2 is 4.

This implies that;

D1 = Diffusion Coefficient 1 = 10
D2 = diffusion coefficient 2 = 8
t2 = time for diffusion 2 = 4

t1 = D2 x t2 / D1
So, t1 = 8 x 4 / 10
t1 = 32 / 10
t1 = 3.2

Therefore, the time for diffusion 1 is 3.2.

Calculating the Time for Diffusion 2 when the Diffusion Coefficient 1, the Diffusion Coefficient 2 and the Time for Diffusion 1 are Given

t2 = D1 x t1 / D2

Where:

t2 = time for diffusion 2
D1 = Diffusion Coefficient 1
D2 = diffusion coefficient 2
t1 = Time for Diffusion 1

Let’s solve an example;
Find the time for diffusion 2 when the diffusion coefficient 1 is 8, the diffusion coefficient 2 is 12 and the time for diffusion is 6.

This implies that;

D1 = Diffusion Coefficient 1 = 8
D2 = diffusion coefficient 2 = 12
t1 = Time for Diffusion 1 = 6

t2 = D1 x t1 / D2
So, t2 = 8 x 6 / 12
t2 = 48 / 12
t2 = 4

Therefore, the time for diffusion 2 is 4.
