How to Calculate and Solve for Diffusion Coefficient at Constant Temperature | Diffusion in Alloying

The above image represents the diffusion coefficient at constant temperature. To calculate diffusion coefficient at constant temperature, four essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Activation Energy of Diffusion (Qd), Gas Constant (R), Temperature (T) and Constant that Varies with Metal Properties (Do).

The formula for calculating diffusion coefficient at constant temperature:

D = Doexp(-Qd/RT)

Where:

D = Diffusion Coefficient at Constant Temperature
Qd = Activation Energy of Diffusion
R = Gas Constant
T = Temperature
Do = Constant that Varies with Metal Properties

Let’s solve an example;
Find the diffusion coefficient at constant temperature when the activation energy of diffusion is 10, the gas constant is 8, the temperature is 12 and the constant that varies with metal properties is 4.

This implies that;

Qd = Activation Energy of Diffusion = 10
R = Gas Constant = 8
T = Temperature = 12
Do = Constant that Varies with Metal Properties = 4

Then, D = Doexp(-Qd/RT)
D = 4exp(-(10)/(8)(12))
That is, D = 4exp(-(10)/(96))
D = 4exp(-(0.10416666666666667))
D = 4exp(-0.10416666666666667)
So, D = 4(0.9010751057212906)
D = 3.60

Therefore, the diffusion coefficient at constant temperature is 3.60m²/s.
